Using Acuweb™Directory

This tutorial we'll get you acquainted with the features of Acuweb™Directory -- one of ten browser-based apps in our fifth generation suite of tools that make it easier than ever for you to effectively manage a categorized, interactive directory on your site, without the need for any prior web-tech knowledge.

Acuweb™Directory allows you to easily create and maintain a database of online listings, whether your site is showcasing area businesses, homes or other large-ticket products for sale or lease, or any other categorized items.

Each listing is clickable to a detail page with additional information images, social media links ….

… and an automatically-generated interactive google map, based on the address you've entered for that listing.

Manage Listings

To manage Acuweb™Directory listings simply choose directory from the Acuweb navigation bar. Any time you select an Acuweb 'app' , the options for that app will appear in the blue sub-nav bar immediately below the main navigation. This method of navigating among your Acuweb apps is consistent across all of your site's tools. You can always click on the name of the app, in the main navigation bar, to return to the starting list-view.

Let's look briefly at the options you'll see here, beginning with the list-view of all existing listings; the "add new listing" button at the top of the list allows you to create new listing records.

The list-view provides you with an overview of each listing, including the directory categories to which it is assigned; contact information; start and end dates; and four function-control buttons, on the right. (notice that if there is no email contact address for a given listing, the email button is automatically grayed out).

Clicking on the 'edit' button takes us to the listing information panel, where you can enter and manage all of the data associated with that listing. Acuweb™Directory includes start and end dates for each listing, important for situations where you want the system to automatically manage the dates on which this listing will appear on your site.

Directory also includes a daily set of options for hours of operation, important if your listings are for retail businesses.

The next panel, "links" allows you to add one or more social media and web links to each listing. You enter the web address, and directory automatically chooses the correct link-icon and places it in the listing output on your site.

Images

In the images panel, you can upload or replace both a logo and a photo associated with the listing (or, these could be two photos). Note that you can also use any image already in your updater file library.

Categories & Discripton

The categories panel is the heart of Acuweb™Directory. Here, you can assign this listing to one or more of the listing categories you've set up (go to Setting Up Categories for more information).

Finally, the description panel lets you enter a detailed description associated with the listing; the editing tools are very similar to what you'll already be using in updater and other Acuweb apps.

Levels

On the main navigation bar, under the blue "levels" tab, Acuweb™Directory also allows you to control how much information is displayed with a given listing, based on the level of detail you wish to show. This is useful in situations where you are charging a fee for listings, and wish to offer tiered pricing, based on the amount of information that will be displayed.

In addition to providing a name and sort order for each level . . .

… the 'display these items' tab allows you to select which fields to display or hide for this listing level; these settings are easily modified later on, as your needs change.

Setting Up Categories

On the blue navigation bar, "categories" allows you to set up and manage the hierarchy by which you'll organize your listings. The categories list-view shows you each category, its place in the hierarchy, the current number of items listed in that category, and a cluster of function-control buttons to the right.

You can drag-and-drop items in this list to change the order in which they will appear, both here in your admin area, and also on the public side of your site, if these categories are also displayed there.

Note that the number shown in the "number of items" column are clickable links, which will instantly show you all of the listings currently associated with each category.

The 'contacts' function button to the right only appears in categories where you've assigned one or more contacts to that category. This function is useful when you want to contact all persons associated with listings in this category.

When you click the 'edit' button for any category . . .

The category edit panel appears, allowing you to control various performance characteristics of that category. Note that categories can be used not only in Acuweb™Directory, but in Acuweb events and Acuweb files as well.

This panel also gives you the option of temporarily hiding this category from public display, and also whether you'd like to allow users the option of assigning user uploads to this category, if you're offering your users the ability to upload files associated with the listings displayed on your site.

The last item, "parent category", is where you establish this category's place in your hierarchy of categories.

Imports

Much like you've seen in Acuweb™Contacts, directory offers you the option of batch-importing new listings into the system, for example, from a spreadsheet or other external data source. Like contacts, directory provides a step-by-step guided process for downloading a spreadsheet template…

And assigning your incoming listings to the desired level and categories in the Acuweb™Directory system.

Note that if any of your incoming listings will need to appear in different categories, it is best to leave these category assignments un-checked, and then apply category assignments to the listings after they're imported.
