Glossary of Terms

This is short for "administration" or "administrator" -- All AcuWeb websites have a special, password-protected "admin" area that only you and others who manage your site may access. The training materials we've posted here all pertain to how you, as a website administrator, can use the various tools in this "Admin area" of your site.
Content and Content Areas
In AcuWeb™Updater, any element on a page not related to the navigation or basic page style what we call "content." The "content" of a page can be controlled by you, through Updater. "Content Areas" are pre-set parts of each page where your Updater stories will appear. Every site has a main content area where the bulk of that page's content is placed. Some sites are customized to include more than one content area for items like ad banners, news headlines, or calendar dates. Your Acuity customer care team can help you if you wish to set up additional content areas on your site.
You may see or hear the term "dynamic" in these training materials. In the AcuWeb System, "dynamic" means a part of your website that is actually generated on demand, either when you make changes to your website, or when your visitors click on certain links during their visit. The advantage of having a dynamic, "on-demand" website is that all the individual pieces that make up your site, from stories to photos to the pages and links that connect them -- can be individually updated and managed by you, so changing any of these elements of your site is easy and quick. It's a very powerful way of managing even large and complex websites, with results that are professional-looking, and consistently well organized for your site's visitors.
Images could be photos, illustrations, logos, or even multimedia (video, audio or animation) files. Updater allows you to embed up to four images in every Story on your website. Updater includes a powerful and easy-to-use Image Library, to help you organize and store any images you may wish to include in stories on your site.
Pages and Styles
Pages are the individual screens in your web browser, where your website content will appear. Because Updater works with an advanced template-based programming system, each page in your site is pre-programmed to maintain the overall look and style of your site, including the background visuals, navigation links, and typestyles, including their size and color. Your Acuity customer care team can help you develop, enhance and update the Style settings for your site.
This is important so people can find your Website when searching for it in Google and other similar search engines. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) involves changing meta information such as the page title and description for better findability on the web. Learn more about SEO.
Site Map and Navigation
The pages of your website are connected by navigation links, to help visitors get around your site. In Updater, each page of your site has been set up to include this site navigation. You can use the Site Map feature in Updater to manage how these pages are organized and linked.
Updater helps you organize the content on each page by grouping related text, images and links into a "story". Stories can be placed into any defined content area on any page of your choice, and moved from page to page with the click of your mouse. If you wish to have multiple stories on a single page, each story can be ordered to appear in the sequence you prefer, from the top to the bottom of each page. This makes it incredibly easy to organize all the content of your site, no matter how large it may get.
