Links

Updater's Content Editor also has an elegant Linking Tool Insert/Edit Link that allows you to turn any string of text into a clickable link to another page within your site; an external link to another website, or even into a download link, allowing your visitors to save the linked file.  You can store such downloadable files -- including PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations, CADs, audio, video and most any other file type in your site's File Library. The link tool can also be used to create email links you can pre-address to specific individuals, as, for example, when you'd like your site visitors to email someone in your organization for additional information.

The Linking Tool also allows you to specify whether you want the resulting link to open in a new browser window; in the same browser window; in a pop-up window; or other similar options. Generally, links to pages within your website should be set to open in the same window; whereas links to pages on other (external) websites should open in a new window, so your site visitor can more easily return to your site after visiting the external link.

If you want to remove a link, simply highlight the linked text and click on the remove link button. Remove Link

There are several different link types:

Web Page

Link to an external website. Be sure to include the http:// before each web address. If you choose this option, be sure to set the link to open in a new window.

  1. Highlight the text in the story body that you want to link.
  2. Click on the link button Insert/Edit Link on the content editor. A pop up box will appear.
  3. In the Link Type drop-down list, choose "Web Page".
  4. Type or paste in a web address from another website into the box. Be sure to include the http:// before your web address.
  5. For the don't forget to choose how you want the linked information to appear drop-down list, choose "New Window (_blank)". This will allow your page to pop up in another window allowing the user to remain on your site.
  6. When done, press "OK" to insert the link in your content editor.

Link to Anchor in the text

If you placed an anchor on your page, you can link to that anchor using this option. This is ideal for larger pages with lots of text. Having an anchor makes it easy to link from one part of the page to the other.

  1. Highlight the text in the story body that you want to link.
  2. Click on the link button Insert/Edit Link on the content editor. A pop up box will appear.
  3. In the Link Type drop-down list, choose "Link to anchor in the text".
  4. Under the "Select an Anchor by Anchor Name" drop-down list, choose the anchor you want to link to. You may also select an anchor by "Element ID" as well.
  5. When done, press "OK" to insert the link in your content editor.

E-Mail

This is one of the more commonly used types of links on a website. We suggest you do NOT link an actual email address text to the email address link. Doing so will cause tons and spam. Instead, use some text like "Contact Susan" and link that text to an email address.

  1. Highlight the text in the story body that you want to link.
  2. Click on the link button Insert/Edit Link on the content editor. A pop up box will appear.
  3. In the Link Type drop-down list, choose "E-Mail".
  4. For E-Mail Address, type in the full email address in the box.
  5. Message subject and message body are optional fields, however, if you want to use them, they can be beneficial.
  6. When done, press "OK" to insert the link in your content editor.

Link to a page in this website

Choose a page to link to from the list of pages in the drop-down menu.

  1. Highlight the text in the story body that you want to link.
  2. Click on the link button Insert/Edit Link on the content editor. A pop up box will appear.
  3. Choose a page from the "Link to a page in this website" drop-down list.
  4. When done, press "OK" to insert the link in your content editor.

Link to an item in your File Library

If you have images, PDF, presentation files, and Word files in the file library, choose one from the drop-down list to link.

  1. Highlight the text in the story body that you want to link.
  2. Click on the link button Insert/Edit Link on the content editor. A pop up box will appear.
  3. Choose a file from the "Link to an item in your file library" drop-down list.
  4. Since these are files, you may want them to open in another window to keep the user from leaving the website. To do this, click on the "Target" tab and choose "New Window (_blank)".
  5. When done, press "OK" to insert the link in your content editor.

Images

The Content Editor also allows you to easily embed in your story any photos or other images you've previously uploaded to the site's File Library. The Image Properties screen allows you to select, label, size, and set layout and placement characteristics for any image.  A miniature preview window lets you see the effect of each setting as you choose it.

How to Insert an Image

  1. Place your cursor in the content editor where you want the image to appear.
  2. Click on the Insert/Edit Image button. Insert/Edit Image A pop-up window will appear.
  3. From the "Choose an Image" drop-down list, choose an image you want to insert into your content. All the files that are in your file library will appear in this list. Preview the image in the box on the right.
  4. Type in a short description in the box. This is the description people will see when they put their mouse over the image in Internet Explorer and other browsers. This is also ideal for search engine optimization as well.
  5. Height and width are already predetermined by the image, however, if you want to make the image smaller, type in a new number (pixels) in the box. You may reset the image to it's original size at any time by clicking on the circle arrow icon next to the boxes.
  6. You can specify layout parameters for your image, including whether you'd like it to have a border; how much horizontal and vertical space you'd like to have between the image and surrounding text or other content elements; whether you'd like the text to "wrap", or flow around the image; and whether you'd like your image to appear to the left or right of adjacent content elements in this story.  All of these parameters are expressed in pixels; on the web, 72 pixels equals one inch; Updater supplies typical "starter" values for each of these parameters, which you may then change to suit your needs.
  7. When done, click the "OK" button and your image will be inserted into the content window.

At this point, it is still easy to adjust the size and placement of your image.  Just click on the image, and use one of the corner 'handles' to enlarge or reduce the size of your image; note the dialog box which shows you, in pixels, the new size of your image.  Bear in mind that stretching an image to a size larger than its original, or "native" size, may result in a blurry or distorted result.

You may also move the image to another position within your story text; either lower or higher in the story, to suit your layout needs.  If you want your image to appear on the opposite side of the story column, we recommend you delete the image (by clicking on it, and then pressing your delete key), and re-add it, through the image properties pop-up, this time using a different setting on the image alignment parameter.

While the Editor window is not an exact reproduction of how your content will appear on the finished web-page, it is a reasonable approximation, and provides a quick and easy way to assemble your content quickly, without the need to write any "web-code."

How to Link an Image

Once you have inserted an image into your content editor, you can also link this image to another page on your site, external website, or file in your file library.

In this example, we will link the image to another page on the website.

  1. In the content editor, click on the image you want to link.
  2. Click on the Insert/Edit Image button Insert/Edit Image and a pop-up window will appear (you may also right-click the mouse button for Windows users).
  3. Click on the "Link to this image" tab at the top.
  4. In the "Link to a page in this website" drop-down list, choose a page you want your image to link to.
  5. When done, click "OK".
