» Are you a visual learner?
Check out our concise, step-by-step Video about Updater's Page Editor video tutorial on Updater's Page Editor.

In AcuWeb™'s Updater™ content management system, your website's pages exist independently of the stories, or "content items" that are assigned to publish on each page.  That is why each page on Updater's Site Map has separate icon-links for "Edit Page" and "Edit Content".  This approach is not only more flexible, in terms of your ability to re-organize content over time, as your site evolves, but it is also a far more efficient way to manage your site.  You can add or rearrange pages, re-locate content, and generally do more with less hassle when your pages and content exist as independent objects.

You will first need to create a new page from the site map. Learn more about creating a new page »

Once a new page has been created, it need to be edited immediately. To edit a page, you must be on the site map.

  1. Click on the Edit Page icon Edit Page next to the page to be edited.
  2. A new page will show up in your open browser window with three (3) sections:

Page Setup

Basic Page Setup

  • Page Name is the name label on the site map and navigation (if dynamic).
  • Page Title is what will be seen in the top of the browser window and the title in Google searches. This is a very important part of search engine optimization and should not be ignored. For best SEO practices, try to use keywords from the page content into the page title and limit length to 65 characters (including spaces) or less.
  • Author Group Access is the group that is allowed to edit the settings on this page. If set to admin, only the admin-level user will be able to change settings on this page. In some instances, there will be additional items to choose from in this list. You can add specific groups for access by creating a new group, then edit the page again using that new group.
  • Use Layout From contains a list of all pages on the website. Each of those pages have a specific layout. To change the layout of the page you are editing to a different layout already being used on the website, choose the page from the list that uses the layout you wish to apply to the page. For example, the About Us page has a one-column layout. Another page, Contact Us, has a two-column layout. If you wanted to change the About Us page to a two-column layout, you would choose the Contact Us page from the drop-down and save changes.

Navigation

  • Links from is a way to control navigation and site map levels. For example, "About Us" links from the Home page, so the level will be one deeper than the global level of Home.

  • Order is another way to change the order of the page in the site map or dynamic navigation. The order can also be changed directly from the site map.
  • Include in Navigation if checked, will allow the page to show up in the navigation, but only if navigation is dynamic. If not sure if the navigation is dynamic? Use the Contact Form [at left] to inquire!
  • Hide "Home" Link in Sub-navigation will hide the "Home" link on the secondary level of navigation on the pages that use dynamic navigation. This option is used in conjunction with "Include in Navigation" above.
  • Page can be deleted from almost all levels (except Single-Author access) only if the box is checked. If the box is not checked, users on access levels below the main admin will not have the option to delete a page.

  • If you have either Contact Manager or AcuPIX included with your AcuWeb services, there will be a button corresponding with each allowing you to prepare your page for these modules. Simply click on the button of the module you wish to use on your page then save your changes on your page.

Page Header/Meta Information

Page header/meta information is important for optimal search engine placement. In an era where Search Engine Optimization, or "SEO," is becoming increasingly more important, Updater's Page Edit Screen allows you to control parameters that determine how easily and how well major Search Engines like Google and Yahoo can "index," or catalogue each page of your site.  This is accomplished through a combination of factors, including your choice of wording for the Page Title (that's what appears above your web page, in the bar at the very top of most web browsers), as well as your ability to assign what's known as "meta data" -- hidden keywords and descriptions that are helpful to the Search Engines -- to each page of your site. Keywords

Keywords allow you to provide additional text for crawler-based search engines to index along with your page content. Unfortunately, most search engine crawlers now ignore the keyword tag.

If keywords are used, follow these guidelines:

  • Use them from your main content on the page.
  • Use important words that people may type into a search engine.
  • Separate each keyword with a space.
  • There is no limit on keywords used, however, using too many keywords that contain some of same words or phrases may be considered keyword spamming and the most search engines will ignore it.

Description

Having a description is the most important thing for search engine optimization. Almost all search engines look at the description. The meta description is the only meta tag that still has relevance.

Three primary uses:

  1. To describe the content of the page accurately and succinctly
  2. To serve as a short, text "advertisement" to click on your results in the search results
  3. To display targeted keywords, not for ranking purposes, but to indicate the content to searchers

Keep the description to 160 characters (including spaces) or less (Google’s character limit for displaying the description in search results).

Copy Page Header/Meta Information

Would you like to copy these Keywords and Description to ALL pages in your site? This script will copy the Keywords and Description from your page "Updater 4 Site map" to ALL other pages in your website. Existing values in your other pages will be overwritten.

A message will ask, "Do you wish to proceed?" Click the "Yes" or "No" button.

IMPORTANT! For this script to work properly, press the "Save Changes" button at the top of your Updater edit page screen to save the meta content you have created or edited. Then, you can choose Yes or No from the pop-up window.

Advanced Settings & Page Layout

The Edit Page Screen also allows more advanced and sophisticated functions to be applied to each page of your site, but these are generally attributes that require a deep understanding of web programming. We recommend that you contact the Acuity Web Team before attempting any changes in these areas.

Advanced Page Setup

  • Target Directory is the location on the server where the page will publish to. Leave this blank for standard web pages. Choose /ud/templates directory for all headline list details pages and special AcuWeb module pages.
  • Change file name to overrides the original file name to whatever is placed in this box. File name MUST include a file extension. For example, photogallery.php can be changed to photos.php.
  • Redirect points the page to a different location on the website. Check the box "Open in a new window?" if you want this page to pop up in a new window when a user clicks on the link. For example, current page is /services.php and redirect could be /Web.php.
  • Onload is a place to put special code in to execute javascript or other types of programming. In most cases, templates will not contain this field, so it will need to be added manually to the templates.
  • Add script to header allows you to add additional scripts pertaining to that page in the header. Some examples would include special style sheets, javascript, etc.
  • Additional sub-navigation links is a place to add static links underneath the original sub-navigation links of that particular page. This will only work if the sub-navigation of the site is dynamic. Format of this special link should be as follows: Link Title Here==http://www.url.com

Page Layout

  • Template URL is the actual HTML template that is used to create the layout of your site. This field should not be touched by non-Acuity users.
  • Layout grid allows Acuity to configure a Website using different components such as content areas, shared items placement, template graphics, and so much more. Unless otherwise instructed, this area should not be touched by non-Acuity users.
